“Here’s that shot in the arm for theatre lovers who are looking for something bold, haunting and hypnotic to get lost in!”—Rolling Stone

In writing the book for Grey Gardens, Doug Wright sought to answer the question, “how could the relatives of American royalty fall so far, so fast?” Setting the first act in 1941, when Grey Gardens was still in its heyday, Wright introduces us to the glamorous Beale women and to their tumultuous dealings with men and love. In Act Two, we encounter the Beales of the Maysles 1975 documentary, living in the most squalid of conditions. Trapped in their house, they cannot escape each other or the ghosts of
their past.

The Studio Theatre’s Grey Gardens will reinvent the world of this musical by uniting the two acts of the play through production and design, creating a cohesive world for both the glittering 1941 Grey Gardens and its decaying 1975 counterpart. With no seat more than eight rows from the stage, the audience will have the chance to experience this xtraordinary production up close with the actors singing without enhanced amplification. From Russell Metheny’s daring set to Alex Jaeger’s gorgeous costumes, the world of this Grey Gardens will come to new life for those who love the Maysles’ documentary, for those who love the musical and for those who just love theatre.

Runtime 2 hours-15 minutes with one 10 minute intermission.
