BE ARTISTIC!
2007-2008 Subscription Season. Turning 30-and still causing trouble!
This season, The Studio Theatre continues to shape the future of national theatre, fostering innovation and bringing the work of major playwrights and directors to Washington audiences. In 2007-2008, Athol Fugard’s My Children! My Africa! explores political awakening in Apartheid South Africa; Conor McPherson will be in attendance for the opening of his luminous play Shining City; The Brothers Size introduces Tarell Alvin McCraney, an astounding young playwright taking theatres across the country by storm; Alan Bennett’s Tony Award-winning The History Boys features a knockout ensemble cast; and Anne Washburn’s The Internationalist brings the work of hip, innovative writing ensemble 13P to the Washington stage.
Special Events/New Initiative: Opening Our Doors
The Studio Theatre’s re-imagined Special Events series features writer-director Steve Cosson, who will bring his company The Civilians to The Studio Theatre to rehearse and present the world premiere of their newest work, This Beautiful City. The Civilians’ residency at The Studio Theatre is one part of a bold new 30th Anniversary initiative: Opening Our Doors. This season, The Studio Theatre is forming artistic partnerships with exciting young companies to develop and produce new work of national significance right here in Washington. In addition to The Civilians world premiere, The Studio Theatre will also welcome a festival of work by performance group rainpan 43, with three different productions in rep: their hit all wear bowlers; their latest show, Amnesia Curiosa; and a brand new
piece that will be developed here, machines machines machines machines
machines machines machines.
2ndStage: Bold, Adventurous Theatre
The Studio 2ndStage also celebrates a milestone: its 20th Anniversary! The 2ndStage Season features two intimate, edgy productions in Stage 4 and a
big, lavish summer musical. This year, playwright Kia Corthron receives her first major Washington production with Breath, Boom; the writer behind Six
Feet Under and American Beauty, Alan Ball, examines race and sexual identity in a post-9/11 world in All That I Will Ever Be; and the wild musical
extravaganza Jerry Springer: The Opera is the biggest production at The Studio Theatre all year.
The Studio Theatre’s 30th Anniversary
Our 2007-2008 season marks the 30th Anniversary of The Studio Theatre! Many events throughout the year are scheduled to celebrate this splendid
occasion, including a special revival of the first play that The Studio Theatre ever produced, The Rimers of Eldritch, which will unfold under Joy
Zinoman’s direction. As a memento of the past 30 years, The Studio Theatre will prepare a publication describing the history, achievements, and impact
of The Studio Theatre’s 30-year history in Washington, DC’s Logan Circle neighborhood. A $30 ticket discount initiative throughout the year will open
doors to our upcoming season for audiences from all financial backgrounds. In addition, The Studio Theatre will create a new 30th Anniversary website
to increase communication with our audiences. In addition, The Studio Theatre 2ndStage will celebrate its 20th Anniversary with an open house for
Studio Theatre fans and friends.
